SUMMARY:FAS Visits CIMMYT
DESCRIPTION:\nA team from the Foundation for Agrarian Studies (FAS) visited the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) in New Delhi on 3 April, 2025, as part of the projects funded by the CGIAR-Standing Panel on Impact Assessment (SPIA) titled “The Dynamics of Agricultural Innovation in North India” and “The Dynamics of Agricultural Innovation in South India.” ( https://fas.org.in/research/research-projects/the-dynamics-of-agricultural-innovation-in-india/ ) The FAS team, comprising Professor Madhura Swaminathan, Dr. Sandipan Baksi, Dr. Tapas S. Modak, and Sai Chandan Kotu, aimed to document the innovations undertaken by CIMMYT in India over the last 20 years.\n\nCIMMYT is a CGIAR centre which is headquartered in Mexico and focuses on cereal production systems in the Global South countries with a particular emphasis on the production of wheat and maize. CIMMYT established its India office in New Delhi in 2001 and works in close collaboration with the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR). In 2011, CIMMYT and ICAR launched a joint initiative called the Borlaug Institute for South Asia.\n\nThe FAS team had an insightful discussion with Dr. B. M. Prasanna, Distinguished Scientist and Regional Director for Asia, and Dr. Alison Laing, Agroecologist and CIMMYT Lead for Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) India. Dr. B. M. Prasanna provided a detailed outline of CIMMYT’s innovations in India. He gave an in-depth presentation on the maize and wheat improvement research led by CIMMYT in the last 20 years. He also introduced the FAS team to the different research themes that are being undertaken in India and the corresponding researchers. Dr. Alison Laing discussed the research being undertaken by CIMMYT India under the research team called the Sustainable Agri-food Systems. Her presentation also focused on the activities undertaken under the CSISA initiative.\nThe visit offered the FAS team valuable insights into CIMMYT’s research activities in India and helped them understand the organisation’s research contributions more systematically. The exchange of relevant materials by the CIMMYT team is expected to further enhance the project’s ongoing work.\n\nHere are a few glimpses from the visit…\n\n \n #gallery-1 {\n margin: auto;\n }\n #gallery-1 .gallery-item {\n float: left;\n margin-top: 10px;\n text-align: center;\n width: 50%;\n }\n #gallery-1 img {\n border: 2px solid #cfcfcf;\n }\n #gallery-1 .gallery-caption {\n margin-left: 0;\n }\n /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n
