SUMMARY:Voices from the Lab and the Field: Oral Histories of Agrarian Change
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Foundation for Agrarian Studies, in collaboration with the Bangalore International Centre (BIC) ( https://bangaloreinternationalcentre.org/ ) and the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) ( https://www.ncbs.res.in/ ), organised an event titled “Voices from the Lab and the Field: Oral Histories of Agrarian Change” on September 24, 2025, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm IST at BIC, Bengaluru. The event explored the agricultural transformations of the 1960s, drawing on oral histories from agricultural science and agrarian movements in India. This discussion is part of the 69th edition of the Archives Public Lecture Series, which features explorations in and around the NCBS archives.\nThe speakers for the event were Parvathi Menon, Former Resident Editor of The Hindu, Bengaluru, and Sandipan Baksi, Director at the Foundation for Agrarian Studies.\nA historian by training with many years of experience in interview journalism, Parvathi presented a case for oral narratives as a valuable stream in historical methodology. Drawing on her ongoing work on the social history of the Kilavenmani atrocity of December 25, 1968, she argued that in reconstructing “recent” history, oral narratives can play an important role in lending context, immediacy, and individual perspective to events from the standpoint of the participants of the struggle.\nSandipan, a historian of science, discussed the interplay between personal experience, contemporary social milieu, and the developments in agricultural science and technology that shaped the life and work of scientists in India’s national agricultural research system from the 1960s, drawing on interviews from an oral-history archive created with the Archives at National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS).\nThe discussion was moderated by Madhura Swaminathan, Professor and Head, Economic Analysis Unit, Indian Statistical Institute.\nStay tuned for more updates on the event.\nKnow more: https://bangaloreinternationalcentre.org/event/sounds-from-the-field/\n\n
