#YSOSS 3 Seminar 8 – Agrarian Change and Accumulation in Central India: Revisiting the Agrarian Question of Capital
The eighth seminar of the FAS Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series 2024-25 will be presented by Sunit Arora, Assistant Professor of Economics, Azim Premji University, Bhopal, on Friday, April 25, 2025, at 4 PM IST.
Sunit’s study argues for the continued relevance of the agrarian question of capital. Grounded in empirical data from primary surveys in central India, it explores how agrarian relations are reconfigured as a result of capital accumulation within agriculture. The study maps the contemporary agrarian change processes as being linked to the process of generation of agrarian surplus, and argues that agrarian capital is essential for accumulation and change at a regional level. In line with Global South scholarship, it emphasises the need to trace the origins and movement of agrarian capital.
The discussant for this session is Dr. Soham Bhattacharya, Assistant Professor, Dr. B R Ambedkar School of Economics University.
The series is chaired by Barbara Harriss-White, Emeritus Professor of Development Studies, the University of Oxford.
