FAS Visits the Office of Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT
A team from the Foundation for Agrarian Studies (FAS) visited the Alliance of Bioversity International and International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in New Delhi on 1 April, 2025, as part of the projects funded by the CGIAR-Standing Panel on Impact Assessment (SPIA) titled “The Dynamics of Agricultural Innovation in North India” and “The Dynamics of Agricultural Innovation in South India.” The FAS team, comprising Dr. Sandipan Baksi, Dr. Tapas S. Modak, and Sai Chandan Kotu, aimed to document the innovations undertaken by the Alliance in India over the last 20 years.
The Alliance was established in 2019 when the two CGIAR centres, Bioversity International and CIAT, were unified under one entity. Their work in India spans more than three decades, covering issues related to biodiversity, environment, and nutrition. They work in close collaboration with the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) and other partners from the Indian National Agricultural Research and Extension System.
The FAS team had a fruitful discussion with Dr. Jai Rana, Senior Scientist and Country-Representative for India. He provided the team with an overview of the work undertaken by the Alliance since its inception in India, with a particular focus on the innovations and policy contributions in the last two decades. The FAS team also interacted with Sonal Dsouza, Partnerships Manager for Asia, and Dr. Sarika Mittra, Consultant. The Alliance’s research team assured support and cooperation for the two projects being undertaken by FAS and appreciated our effort in reaching out to them to understand the impact of their work in India.
The visit provided the FAS project team with useful insights into the nature of Alliance’s work in India. The receipt of relevant material and project resources from the Alliance’s research team will aid the ongoing research efforts at FAS.
