FAS team at St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore
A seminar was organised by the Postgraduate Department of Economics, St Joseph’s College, Bangalore, on February 21, 2018, to discuss the work of the Foundation for Agrarian Studies (FAS).The event was attended by about 80 students from the Economics and the Political Science Departments.
The programme began with a welcome speech by Subhashini Muthukrishnan, Head of the Department of Economics & Dean of Social Sciences, St Joseph’s College. Sandipan Baksi, Programme Coordinator at FAS, introduced the major activities of the Foundation. This was followed by a detailed presentation by Madhura Swaminathan on the “The Small Farm Economy of India”. Professor Swaminathan’s talk was based on data from 17 villages surveyed by FAS as part of the Project on Agrarian Relations in India (PARI). Arindam Das, who heads PARI at FAS, described in great detail the method and the database. He also talked about some of the unique features of the data.
This was followed by an interesting discussion with the students and a vote of thanks by Nilesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, St Joseph’s College.
It was an engaging session and the Foundation expresses its thanks to the Department for providing this opportunity. The Foundation looks forward to many such occasions.
