Field Visit to Lower Cauvery Delta

Daizo Sugimoto, Professor at the Department of Economics, Meijo University, Japan, and Daisuke Sakata, Associate Professor, Kanagawa University, Japan, visited the lower Cauvery delta in Tamil Nadu along with our colleagues Sethu C.A., Senior Research Assistant, Tapas Modak, Associate Fellow at FAS. Hariharan Acharya, an intern  at the Foundation and a student of MA Economics at the Central University of Tamil Nadu also participated in the visit.

The visit was part of a research project that looks at challenges facing agriculture in relation to surface irrigation systems, particularly in the face of adverse climatic conditions, and its effects on farmers at the village level. The village of Palakurichi in the delta was the principal site for this visit.

The ten day field visit involved household surveys with farmers from different sections of the village economy, case studies, and interviews with relevant administrative officials from the Cauvery Delta region.

The survey team shared the preliminary impressions from the visit in an in-house seminar at the Foundation’s office on September 2, 2024.

Here are some glimpses from their visit…
