Dr Yoshifumi Usami, Retired Professor, Osaka Prefecture University, and a longtime research collaborator of FAS visited our office between September 1 and 10, 2022.

The purpose of his visit was to understand the process of updation of land records in Palakurichi, a village that was surveyed by the Foundation as part of its project to study the “Agrarian Relations in the Lower-Cauvery Delta.”

Professor Usami worked with Tapas Modak, Associate Fellow, and C A Sethu, Research Assistant, in this regard. A four member team consisting of Arindam Das, Joint Director of FAS, Tapas, Sethu and Professor Usami also revisited Palakurichi to obtain detailed information about the village’s land records.

During his visit to the Foundation’s office, Professor Usami engaged in conversations with researchers regarding their work and shared his insights.

He discussed the construction of historical agricultural wage database in India since the 1950s with Arindam Das, Joint Director of the Foundation and possible research ideas that can be explored using this database. Professor Usami also discussed the patterns of migration from Bihar and Tamil Nadu with Rakesh Mahato, Senior Data Analyst at the Foundation.
