SUMMARY:#YSOSS 3 – Impact of Agrarian Crisis on Women Farmers in Akoli Khurd Village, Yavatmal, Maharashtra
DESCRIPTION:\nThe last seminar of the FAS Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series 2024-25 was presented by Shivangi Goswami, PhD. scholar, TERI School of Advanced Studies, on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 4 PM IST.\nShivangi’s study explores multifaceted challenges faced by women farmers in the context of the agrarian crisis in Akoli Khurd village, Yavatmal district, Vidarbha region, Maharashtra—an area known as the epicentre of farmer suicides. The research focuses on their lived experiences through the crisis, the coping mechanisms they adopt, and the effectiveness of various policy interventions. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study employs participant observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions to gain a nuanced understanding of women farmers’ challenges and struggles.\nThe discussant for this session is Dr. Ranjini Basu, Non-Resident Visiting Scholar, University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India and Centre for Advanced Study of India, UPenn.\nThe series is chaired by Barbara Harriss-White, Emeritus Professor of Development Studies, the University of Oxford.\n\nFor more details, contact us at events[at]fas[dot]org[dot]in.\n\n\n
