FAS Team Visits Mandya Region as part of the project “Comprehensive Research on Canal Irrigation System and Agriculture in the Cauvery River Basin”

Daizo Sugimoto, Professor in the Department of Economics at Meijo University, Japan, visited the Mandya region in Karnataka along with FAS team members Sethu C. A. (Senior Research Assistant), Arindam Das (Joint Director), Tapas Modak (Joint Director), and Viswas Vinod, an intern at the Foundation and an MA Public Policy student at the National Law School of India University.

The visit was part of the ongoing project titled “Comprehensive Research on Canal Irrigation System and Agriculture in the Cauvery River Basin.” The project examines the challenges facing agriculture under surface irrigation systems, particularly in the context of adverse climatic conditions, and explores their implications for farmers at the village level. The village of Alabujanahalli served as the principal field site for this visit.

The fifteen-day field visit was conducted in two phases: the first from September 21 to 27, 2025, and the second from October 8 to 15, 2025. The team carried out household surveys with farmers across different sections of the village economy, conducted detailed case studies, and interviewed key administrative officials from the Upper Cauvery Basin region.

Here are some glimpses from their visit…
