FAS Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series 2023-24

The Foundation for Agrarian Studies, in collaboration with Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, is organising the second edition of its Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series. As part of the series, seven young scholars, working in the field of agrarian studies and socio-economic life in rural regions of South Asia, will present their work. The seminars will be held on the last Thursday of every month (barring June and December) at 1630 IST. Barbara Harriss-White, Emeritus Professor of Development Studies, University of Oxford, will Chair the seminar series.

The first edition, held from April to December 2022, featured nine young scholars working in the field of agrarian studies and on socio-economic life in rural India. The Series, also Chaired by Professor Barbara, attracted audiences from different parts of the world. It was a small step towards building a network of young scholars working on the subject. We wish to build on this network of scholars with this second edition of the seminar series.

The first seminar of this edition was presented by Dr Shiba Shankar Pattayat, Assistant Professor of Economics, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Yeshwanthpur Campus, Bengaluru, on Thursday, May 25, 2023. Shiba Shankar spoke about his work, “Rural Labour Market Transformation in India: Impacts on the Agriculture Sector.”

The second seminar of this edition was presented by Shilpi Kundu, Ph.D. Scholar, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia , on Thursday, July 27, 2023. Shilpi Kundu spoke about her work, Gender Mainstreaming in Climate Change Responses – Insights from Agricultural Landscape in Coastal Bangladesh”.

The third seminar of the series featuring Sathiyamoorthy Sarujan, PhD Scholar, University of Tokyo, Japan was held on Thursday, August 31, 2023. Sathiyamoorthy Sarujan spoke about his work, Effectiveness of the Community Management in Mangrove Restoration – Evidence from Northern Sri Lanka”. His work examines the role of  community management in managing the global commons. Sarujan’s study attempts to provide  empirical evidences towards the effectiveness of community-based approach in mangrove management in the northern province of Srilanka.

The fifth seminar of the series featuring Dr. Nageshwar Bansode, Assistant Professor, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar School of Economics University, Bengaluru was held on Thursday, January 25, 2024. Dr. Nageshwar Bansode presented his work, Caste Discrimination and Economic Outcomes: Evidences from a Backward Region of Maharashtra ”. His study draws on primary data from two villages in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. The study brings out the discriminatory structure and exclusionary practices, particularly in the market sphere, and their impact on the economic condition of households.

The sixth seminar of the FAS Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series 2023-24 featuring Bisakha DewanPhD Scholar, University of Queensland, Australia was held on Thursday, February 29, 2024. Bisakha Dewan presented her work, Navigating Power Structures: Examining Women’s Agency and Empowerment in Contract Farming in Bangladesh”.  In this research, she examines how power dynamics affect women’s empowerment arising from their participation in contract farming activities. Using qualitative interviews, this study adapts a conceptualisation of empowerment from the development literature.

The seventh, and the last seminar of the FAS Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series 2023-24 featuring Mrityunjay PandeyPhD Scholar, University of Hyderabad, was held on Thursday, March 28, 2024. Mrityunjay Pandey presented his work, Livelihood, Production Organisation, and Accumulation: A village study from Bihar”.  In this research, He examines current development trajectory of agrarian economy of Bihar, by analysing livelihood conditions, and strategies of landless labour households, production organisation of cultivator households, and sources of surplus and accumulation strategies of surplus-appropriating households. This research is based on an in-depth study of a village in North Bihar.
