FAS conducted Focus Group Discussions in Alabujanahalli village

The Foundation for Agrarian Studies conducted Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with two groups of women in Alabujanahalli village, Maddur taluk, Mandya district of Karnataka on November 18-19, 2021. The first group consisted of seven Dalit women, mainly involved in farm and non-farm manual work. The second group had nine women from peasant households belonging to the Vokkaliga caste. These FGDs were conducted as part of a study by the International Labour Organization (ILO), that aims to understand the gendered impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on women in rural India.

Alabujanahalli belongs to the Cauvery-irrigated region of South Karnataka. A significant section of the households are Vokkaliga – a major land owning caste, while many of the remaining households are Dalit households. The major crops grown are sugarcane, rice, and ragi. The village is located very close to a major sugar factory in the district. A large number of households practice sericulture and livestock-raising. The village was surveyed by the Foundation in 2009, and 2014, under the project on agrarian relations in India. The Foundation also conducted time use surveys of women in the village in 2019, as part of the study of women’s work in rural economies in India.

The Foundation will soon be conducting a round of FGDs in Palakuruchi, a village located at the tail end of the lower Cauvery delta in Kilvelur taluk of Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu.
