Fieldwork to Study the Prevalence of Digital Information Channels in Nalgonda

As part of a study of the use of digital channels of information in agriculture, a team from the Foundation for Agrarian Studies (FAS) conducted fieldwork in Nalgonda district, Telangana, from August 24- September 11, 2026.

The FAS team comprised Dr. Sandipan Baksi (Director), Dr. Tapas S. Modak (Joint Director), Harshan T. P.  (Associate Research Fellow), Savani Mane (Research Assistant), and N. Sai Charan Teja (Intern). The visit aimed to better understand the role of different digital channels in Telangana’s digital agriculture ecosystem. The interviews focused on digital extension services, and the roles of public and private institutions in advancing digital agriculture.

The stakeholders for the fieldwork were identified and finalised through prior desk research, which helped map key actors and institutions involved in the digital agriculture ecosystem in Nalgonda.

The team met with Agricultural Extension Officers from Nalgonda mandal to understand their role in the extension ecosystem, and reviewed the public and private apps used by farmers.

In-depth interviews were also held with a diverse set of stakeholders: input dealers, agribusiness representatives, content creators, NGOs, regional representatives of agritech startups developing digital transaction channels, and farmers. The team also spoke with representatives of various Farmer Producer Organisations and panchayat officials to understand their perspectives on how different digital technologies are reaching the region.

The insights will feed into ongoing research under the project.
