The Foundation for Agrarian Studies is deeply saddened by the death of Abhijit Sen — a longtime friend and mentor to the researchers at the Foundation, and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Review of Agrarian Studies.
His contributions to the field of agriculture economics, both as a teacher at the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, and as a policy professional at the Planning Commission, are immense. All through his time at the Planning Commission, Professor Sen has continued his advocacy of universal PDS and remunerative prices for farmers – even though this was at variance with the official policies of the then government.
His book, titled, “State of the Indian Farmer: A Millennium Study,” is considered a must read for all students of Indian agriculture.
The Foundation was immensely benefited by his presence on the Editorial Advisory Board of its journal, Review of Agrarian Studies.
We offer our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
