Research Announcements

The Foundation for Agrarian Studies invites senior scholars and students (doctoral and post-doctoral) who are interested in the field of agrarian studies and different socio-economic aspects of rural life in India, to come and work on a large database based on primary data on rural India.

The Foundation currently has data on various socio-economic indicators from 27 villages, across 12 States of India, collected through the Project on Agrarian Relations in India surveys. In addition, the Foundation also has village level data from few other villages studied by our research collaborators at different points in time. This unique data archive on villages in contemporary India presents an opportunity to study, explain and document rural change, through in-depth research on various themes including production and productivity, labour processes, livelihoods, migration and rural amenities. It also enables research on the socio-economic characteristics of different strata of the rural population, and allows for specific studies on sectional deprivation in rural India, particularly with regard to Dalit and Scheduled Tribe populations, women, specific minorities and the income-poor.

Announcement for senior scholars

The Foundation welcomes scholars of rural India to collaborate and make use of this data archive for research. The Foundation shall facilitate the boarding and lodging for the scholars during the tenure of such collaboration. It is expected that the scholars work in close association with one or more research staff/s from the in-house team and mentor them in the process. The focus of such collaboration can either be thematic or the more general concept of rural change in India in the era of capitalist globalization and liberalization. Interested scholars are requested to submit a short research proposal to the Director at sandipan[at]fas[dot]org[dot]in.
