The third seminar of the FAS Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series, July-November 2026, will be presented by Sarojasree Ranukuntla, ICSSR Doctoral Fellow, Centre for Economic and Social Studies, Hyderabad, on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 4 PM IST.
Sarojasree’s study examines whether income diversification is associated with income-surplus or income-deficit positions among agricultural households in India. The main sources of data used for the analysis are the unit-level data from the 70th and 77th NSSO rounds of the Situation Assessment Survey (SAS), 2013, and the Situation Assessment Survey of Agricultural Households and Landholdings in Rural India, 2019.
The study examines income diversification using the Simpson Income Diversification Index across agro-ecological zones and operational holding sizes. It also analyses 16 income-source groups to understand how specific combinations of crop, livestock, wage, and non-farm income relate to households’ income positions.
The major findings show that single-source households are predominantly income-deficit, while households with multiple income sources, particularly those with all four sources(crop, livestock, wage, and non-farm), tend to have higher incomes and more favourable income positions. This also reflects the differences in farming conditions and livelihood opportunities across agro-ecological zones in India.
