We are glad to announce the fourth edition of the FAS Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series.
The first seminar of the FAS Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series, July-November 2026, will be presented by Mrityunjay Rao, Young Professional, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Delhi, on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 4 PM IST.
Mrityunjay’s study aims to understand various issues related to the brick kiln industry in India by connecting economic analysis with field-based observations. With a focus on Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh, his research examines the industry’s historical evolution, industrial structure, labour relations, working and living conditions, and the status of women and child workers in brick kilns.
Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines analysis of secondary data from the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE 2023–24) with questionnaire-based field surveys of brick kiln enterprises and workers to provide both macro- and micro-level perspectives on the industry.
The discussant for this session is Sahil Mehra, independent researcher.
The series is chaired by Barbara Harriss-White, Emeritus Professor of Development Studies, the University of Oxford.
